Are We-Blogging?

Obviously the concept of blogging is at least 2 decades old and has evolved drastically over time to a point where the internet is frantically searching for words in the vast ocean of videos, images and other forms of media. Does the idea of writing need saving? Maybe, yes.

At least that is what I have been pondering over since my desire to return to blogging after an abrupt and elongated hiatus. I felt that in today’s media-afflicted internet space, blogs have somewhat lost their spark, or in other words, they weren’t interesting anymore. There is a natural hesitation to write a blog because there are so many other, effortless ways to express yourself in the internet – Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and the list goes on. The idea of writing an essay is far too cumbersome as compared to clicking a few pictures and a video, tagging some people, hashing some words and there you go. In just 5-6 minutes, or lesser, you have expressed yourself to the world. Wow!

The convenience and swiftness of moving from a thought to a “Post” or “Tweet” or “Story” is extremely high, which makes them more attractive and “Viral” in nature. If we analyze from a First Principle point of view, all these posts, tweets, stories are basically different forms of blogging. The original expression was called a weblog, meaning a record or piece of information in the world wide web, which broke down to “we-blog” and the word blog stuck. So, in essence, everybody in the word is just blogging but in much different forms. Now, this realization opens up so many possibilities to innovate in the sphere of “web expression”, if I can call it. I am sure there is some form of “blogging” which can revive and help preserve the art of writing in this fast-paced, hedonistic and consumeristic world.
